Isle of Wight Steam Railway

Friday 28th September until Sunday 30th September 2018

A diesel event will take place this weekend.

03197 and 03399 will be visiting.

Home fleet D2554 and D2059 should also be in use.

The three Class 03 shunters will be working passenger stock during the day. So it will be one Class 03 on the bogie set, one Class 03 on the 4 wheeled set and one Class 03 on the brakevan shuttles. This Class 03 will be replaced by the Class 05 in the afternoon.

For the first time ever we have managed to arrange a pre service trip along the whole length of the line conveying visitors in our 3 brakevans . There will be a separate fare for this and there are very limited spaces. This will happen on all 3 days. Departure time from Havenstreet is 09:01 and Smallbrook 09:37 which will connect into Island line trains with special stops. Pre booking is advisable. Tickets now on sale for the Havenstreet-Smallbrook-Wootton -Havenstreet brake van run. Just one a day numbers are limited as we only have 3 vans. Ticket includes an all day rover and costs £30. We hope this year to have some of our on track machines on display in an accessible area. The Wickham and Permaquip "LaLa" have been requested.

The Train Story Discovery Centre will be open as will the Refreshment Room and Railway Shop.

There will be a Real ale bar in the marquee on the Show Field and food will be served throughout the event.

Llangollen Railway

Llangollen Shunter Shuttle - Saturday 29th September 2018

A joint fixture with Llangollen Diesel Group and PLEG departing at 12.15; an unusual opportunity to enjoy a brakevan ride behind 08195 as part of the Diesel Day. Route: Llangollen station, past Goods Jn ground frame to Pentre Carriage & Wagon Works gates. Then running via Fford Jn up the incline to Llangollen Yard Diesel Road before returning to the station.

There is the option of upgrading your Shunter Shuttle ticket to a one day rover on the day.

The Saturday 12:15 brakevan ride bookable via the BLS website is now FULL. Thank you to those who booked. To those who are interested but missed out - as stated below: Places on the 15:00 and 16:00 and all Sunday workings are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis onsite, on the day. As per last year, the crew will try and run a list of spaces on each working that people can put their name down for on each day. Apologies for the limited capacity, but we only have two fitted vans available and one must carry a guard without passengers present.

Llangollen Railway

Saturday 29th September and Sunday 30th September 2018

A diesel gala will take place this weekend.

Home fleet 08195 6940 1566 should be out.

D5310 is out of service due to a traction motor fault. Repairs are unfortunately looking likely to take a while.

Visiting from the CVR will be 33102 which should also do driver experience.

Friday 28th should see 33102 on the scheduled 3 trip timetable in place of the rostered DMU to extend the event (thanks to the LR Railcar Group for supporting this).

The cart (104/108) should also do a few turns.

There will be an on-train bar on the Saturday evening workings.

£15 mini-driver experience hopefully using 33102 light engine while the train lays over at Glyndyfrdwy. Priority for places on this will be given to ticket holders.

Shunter shuttles will feature. Places on the shunter shuttle will be limited. Arrangements will be as last year - allocated on a first-come first served basis to ticket-holders on the day via a list made by the train crew. You can also book an advanced place online exclusively through the guys at PLEG (not yet set up). Shuttle tickets can be upgraded to day rovers on the day if you wish.

Day Rovers will cost: Adults £18.15, Senior £16.00, Children £10.60. Family tickets and two-day rovers also available.

Ribblesdale Cement Works

Thanks to Hanson Cement Ribblesdale (part of Heidelberg Cement), identical 'all available lines' tours of the branch railway at 10.00, 11.00, 12.00 & 13.00, each limited to 50 participants, in our Society mess van 'Molly' and lasting about 45 minutes.

Using a temporary platform, these cover the entire railway system, to the NR boundary near the Blackburn to Hellifield line, both siding roads and the loco shed road. Operated by volunteers and Hanson staff, the onsite locos GECT 0-6-0DH 5396 and 5401 of 1975 in 'top & tail' formation.

Six of the GWR home fleet will be out each day with 3 sets of stock plus the 3 car DMU being used as a 4th set of stock.

Both days feature an intensive timetable with 45 minute interval departures from Toddington, Broadway and Cheltenham Racecourse so plenty of miles on offer.

First trains are as follows: 1000 Toddington - Broadway (train starts at Winchcombe), 1015 Toddington - Cheltenham Spa, 1030 Broadway - Cheltenham, 1025 Cheltenham - Broadway.

Normal fares will apply for this event so a day rover will be £17 in advance or £18 on the day.

Ample parking space is available.

The Screaming Valentas.

A special, low-cost railtour with a difference as BLS partner with 125 Group and East Midlands Trains (EMT) to take a newly refurbished EMT (ex-Grand Central) six coach HST set from Derby to the Great Central Railway (Nottingham), using the connection off the mainline at Loughborough South Jn. Traction is expected to be two EMT buffer fitted powercars as far as Ruddington, where one EMT power car will be removed in favour of 125 Group operated prototype powercar, preserved, 41001.

First Class passengers will benefit from inclusive hot drinks, light snacks, and free Wi-Fi whilst a range of drinks and light refreshments will be available to purchase from the Buffet Car, including a choice of real ales. The charter will be raising funds for 125 Group in support of their recently launched HST Depot Appeal. See 125 Group for details. A 125 Group and Branch Line Society sales stand will be provided, with iconic industrial designer Sir Kenneth Grange on hand to autograph your souvenirs and memorabilia. As usual, a charity raffle will take place with some fantastic prizes on offer.

Timings and routing are provisional and now submitted to Network Rail for validation: Derby P6 (pick up 08.29) – Chaddesden Sidings (carriage roads 1, 3 or 4 requested) (reverse) – Pilot Line – Derby P7/service platform – Pilot Line – Loughborough South Jn (reverse) – Rushcliffe Up Platform – 50 Steps (reverse) – Ruddington Fields P1.

Whilst at GCR(N) a number of unusual moves are planned to include Ruddington Relief Road, Rushcliffe Up Loop in full including use of Rushcliffe bay platform, both sides of 50 Steps Loop and both main platforms at Rushcliffe Halt.

Ruddington Fields P1 – 28 Points (reverse) – Ruddington Fields P2 (reverse) – 50 Steps (reverse) - Loughborough South Jn – Leicester Up & Dn Slow – Knighton Jn (reverse) – Leicester P1 (set down - time:TBC) – Up & Dn Goods (Humberstone Road) – Toton High Level Goods – Ilkeston Jn (reverse) – Toton Centre - Derby P5 (set down 18.38).

FARES: Standard Class £41.01, First Class £62.00.

10.30 & 12.00 (two identical trips): West Coast Railways (WCR) with BLS and PLEG are delighted to announce a rare Track & Traction event at WCR's Carnforth base. This is raising money for The Brooke Hospital for Animals and also
Compassion in World Farming

Max 64 participants per trip in a TSO; 03196 and 08485 will operate 'top & tail' for about 60 minutes.

A condition of site entry is that participants must follow stewards' instructions and, although photography for personal use is permitted, no images may be shared on social media, Flickr etc or published in the railway press or otherwise.

Subject to line availability, (which should be better than usual as three trains are due out)/operational constraints, the train will cover as many tracks as safely available in 60 mins.
